Whether short or tall, healthy palm trees are usually a good sight to behold. From date palms to sago or areca, palm tree leaves can come in several forms and varieties. However, just like other plants, palm trees can also be affected by pests and diseases that alter the elegant color of their leaves to yellow, white or even brown.

In this article, we will discuss what it means when you observe the presence of white spots on the leaves of your palm trees, and most importantly, how you can rightly treat and get rid of these pesky spots so that the health of your palm trees is not adversely affected.

WHAT DOES THE PRESENCE OF WHITE SPOTS ON MY PALM TREE’S LEAVES MEAN?

Leaves of palm trees may have white spots due to two common reasons. Usually, one can only be able to accurately tell what these white spots mean through thorough examination of the fronds.

WHAT CAUSES WHITE SPOTS IN PALM TREE LEAVES?

By nature, it is normal to notice that some palm varieties have fronds with waxy surfaces that look like tiny white spots.  However, bigger white spots on the fronds may mean something else – a scale infestation.

Scales are tiny insect pests that attach themselves to the leaves and trunks of palms and other plants. These tiny insects suck the sap and damage the palm tree leaves and may kill the plant eventually.  Also called cycad aulacaspis scale, the sago palm scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui) is the deadliest of these pests because it spreads faster and kills palm trees quickly. Scales have a white, waxy covering on their bodies that can make them immune to some insecticides.

When scale pests infest your palm trees, their sucking action makes the leaves appear whitewashed – as if white paint has been splattered on them. Additionally, the leaves of the palm trees change color to yellow or brown as these insect pests sap nutrients from the plant.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR PALM TREE?

As stated earlier, scale infestation on your palm trees can be deadly. The plant may eventually succumb and die off if corrective measures are not taken early enough. Even though one might not be able to totally prevent scale infestation, quick intervention can wade off scale insects on your tree, save the tree from further harm and prevent eventual death.
